Besides obvious gains in damage reduction you gain from better armor, stamina, and avoidance on gear, there are steps you can take during combat to help reduce incoming damage and relieve stress on the healer.
First, make sure all targets you are fighting are in front of you. You can not block, dodge, or parry attacks made from behind. Also with positioning, be aware of area of effect attacks that enemies can perform, and if they are frontal cones, backwards cones, or 360 Area-of-Effect centered on the enemy, and position/face the enemies accordingly.
Second of all, maintaining Thunderclap and Demoralizing Shout is a massive reduction in damage, in the realm of 25%+.
Third is to interrupt and prevent damaging spells. As a Protection Warrior, you have three effective tools to prevent spells from going off. Shield Bash, of course, is an effective spell interrupt. Ideally, it’s used near the end of a cast, so that the enemy wasted time casting for no benefit. The second tool is Concussion Blow. A stunned target is obviously not casting. Thirdly, you have Spell Reflection, which is the best of the three if applicable, due to the returned damage and the fact it is off the global cooldown.
